We have so many toys! So many that they are on rotation and my girls are only 15 months old. Most have been generously given to us, passed down from friends with older children or gifted to the girls by our doting family. This spread has completely taken over what used to be my dining room with colourful blocks, cars, singing fisher price toys, walkers and farm animals. Even my childhood tea set has made an appearance of late.

We are incredibly lucky that even at this early developmental stage our girls have seemingly endless toy choices, yet they still tire of them quickly. In an effort to reduce our impact on the environment and attempt a less chaotic, more cost-effective, minimalist approach, we joined our local toy library in Parkholme. The joining fee is $20 per year which is incredibly reasonable given that I get two new toys for my girls to play with almost every fortnight. It keeps the 'screen time' at bay and offers additional play opportunities for their development.

So, what is on offer? Most toy libraries have items categorised so that you can easily select toys according to your child's developmental stage. There are musical toys, puzzles and games, imaginative play, ride on toys, kitchenettes and cash registers, sporting equipment and so much more.

Most toy libraries require you to hold a state library card which is free to join, or to provide ID and they will set you up with a separate toy library card. Listed below are the annual fees to join each of the Adelaide metro toy libraries. Many offer per term prices and some offer concession discounts on request too. Their hours sometimes differ to the library they are attached to so keep this in mind when looking to go in.

Toy Libraries Australia is a great website that lists all of the 270 toy libraries across the country but here is a list of the Adelaide metro based toy libraries so you can get out and join your local!
