Volunteers are the backbone of The Smith Family. Without them, much of the work they do would not be possible. Each year, members of the community, their corporate partners and VIEW Club members generously give their time, skills and energy to support their work with thousands of disadvantaged Australian children and their families.

[Link https://www.thesmithfamily.com.au/ The Smith Family] has a long and proud association with Christmas. The organisation was founded in 1922 when five businessmen decided to deliver toys to orphans on Christmas Eve. Since then The Smith Family have grown and developed and what they do has changed to meet the needs of an ever-changing society, but they still deliver toy and book gift packs to families at Christmas.

This gesture of goodwill ensures that all Australian families can come together at Christmas to share gifts and celebrate life. The Smith Family continues to provide opportunities for disadvantaged Australians to participate fully in society and they believe that Christmas is a time when all Australians should feel they belong.

What is involved?

Throughout the Christmas period they have a number of activities that include:

  • Christmas gift preparation (GIFT PREP) – You’ll be busy on your feet doing a variety of important tasks, like sorting through toys and books, packing and lifting boxes/bags (up to 10kg) for distribution, and setting up or packing down the venue/warehouse. A rewarding, hands-on experience spent alongside other volunteers and team members!

  • Delivery day venue support (D-DAY SUPPORT) – You could be doing one of many important roles like carrying out toy and book packs to cars, greeting and briefing the drivers, controlling traffic, setting up/packing down the venue/warehouse, and supplying refreshments to fellow volunteers. This high-paced day is filled with excitement and cheer, rallying together to get the toys and books safely on their way to the children!

  • Prepare and Relocate Donated Goods (PRG) – At the end of the Christmas activity week, they need a group of helpers for the final toy and book packs as well as stocktake, pack up, and relocate all left-over items, which may require lifting and carrying (up to 10kg). Your hard work and contribution on this day is pivotal in helping them to prepare for next year’s event.
