Real world mum groups can sometimes get a bad name for being competitive, unsupportive and judgmental, which can be correct if the group's dynamics are wrong, or if it's stuck in a rut doing the same things every week.

However, mum groups can also be amazingly positive and so much fun! Once you've found the right one for you, you will wonder how you ever coped before you met your wonderful new friends.

If you're looking at starting up a new group, or you're about to join one, keep these tips in mind of what makes a great mums group, to ensure the group is a success:

When there's no judgment. You should feel comfortable asking questions and sharing any lows you may currently feel.

On the flip side, you should feel welcome sharing anything that has made you smile that week, or something that you're proud of.

Respect. If you voice an opinion that another mum doesn't agree with, everyone should acknowledge that no two parenting methods are exactly the same, and listen to what you have to say.

Mix it up. One week there could be the option to chat freely and relax, with no agenda for your meet-up. The next week, get the kids messy with a craft activity.

You could even invite a professional along one week to teach the group something new, such as health professional.

Have fun with the location. There are so many parks, child-friendly cafes and playcentres that you could explore somewhere new every week!
